The Boston Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America selected Jon Lester as the Red Sox Pitcher of the Year. The left-hander went 15-8 with a 3.41 ERA (77 ER/203.1 IP) in 32 starts last season. He led all Major League lefties and finished third in the AL with a career-high 225 strikeouts. Lester, who also won the BBWAA award in 2008, is the first Red Sox hurler to take home the honor in back-to-back seasons since Pedro Martinez (1998-2000) and the only lefty ever to accomplish the feat. The Boston BBWAA also announced other honorees, including Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Carlos Pena as New England Player of the Year, new Red Sox first base coach Ron Johnson as Unsung Hero and longtime Providence Journal Red Sox beat writer Steve Krasner as the Dave O'Hara Award winner. Winners will receive their awards at the annual Boston BBWAA dinner on Thursday, January 14 at the Westin Waterfront Hotel in South Boston. Tickets are available for $150 each by sending a check to Boston Chapter BBWAA, PO Box 7346, Nashua, NH 03060. |
